Neutron scattering instrumentation at the second ESS moderator – a discussion 1h

The project HighNESS, funded by the European Commission, strives for developing a second moderator for ESS, complementing the currently constructed first so-called butterfly pancake moderator. The basic idea was to design a large area high intensity moderator also offering very cold and potentially ultra-cold neutrons. While the moderator is additionally intended to supply the nn-bar fundamental physics experiment, here we will focus on implications and opportunities for condensed matter investigation instrumentation.
Initial considerations identified SANS, imaging and spin-echo instruments to potentially profit from a large area, high intensity moderator with improved performance in the cold neutron regime. A workshop has also been held to identify opportunities for condensed matter science instrumentation served by a very cold neutron (VCN) moderator. However, no clear practical gains were identified.
The development of two alternative SANS instrument concepts to profit from the second moderator is currently most advanced, neutron imaging is considered and appears straightforward, while work concerning a spin-echo instrument has been started. We consider that potentially also other methods could profit from the new moderator, the characteristics of which slowly take shape. Discussion could include e.g. time-of-flight spectroscopy.
We will introduce the current assumptions concerning the second moderator as well as draft conceptual designs for corresponding instrumentation. We hope to, thus, stir a lively discussion concerning potential instruments and desired moderator qualities. We also welcome very much collaboration in the development of instrument concepts and can provide some simulation resources to investigate such.
