Welcome to the EuCARD-2 Workshop on Cooling and Heat Recovery held at MAX IV Laboratory (MAX-lab) in Lund.

Please register latest on March 28.

This workshop will be a luch-to-lunch event with a optional visit to the MAX IV facility building site.

At the workshop, results from the energy inventory will be summarized and some different methods and experiences on heat recovery and recycling will be presented.

13:00 → 13:30 Welcome and MAX IV introduction: Mr. Christoph Quitmann, Director at MAX IV Laboratory

MAX IV is the new synchrotron project under construction in Lund, Sweden. It not only has the ambition to be a world leader in the brightness of the x-rays produced, beyond that it aims at doing it in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way. The presentation will outline the coherent concept going all the way from accelerator design, building technology, heat recovery to landscaping and transport systems.

13:45 → 14:30 Cooling and Heat Recovery at the MAX IV Research Facility: Mr. Björn Eldvall, E.ON, and Mr. Martin Gierow, Kraftringen

Max IV is designed with a complex water cooling system, enabling both internal heat recovery and heat recovery to the external district heating system. In this presentation, Mr. Björn Eldvall from Max IV and Mr. Martin Gierow from Kraftringen will present the basic idea, the process that lead up to the agreement and the economic and environmental aspects with the heat recovery project.

The current energy situation for particle accelerators is investigated and presented together with an overview over technical solutions that are possible to initiate for making energy efficiency improvements and a brief conclusion over where they would be most beneficial. It is being investigated how surplus heat, especially low temperature heat, can be reused efficiently with lowest possible addition of auxiliary energy.

08:30 → 09:00 Energy saving experience at DAFNE: Dr. Ruggero Ricci, electrical installation dept. head, INFN and Dr. Ugo Rotundo, fluid plants dept. head, INFN

Dafne is an e+e- particle collider built in the 90's. During the last 10 years of operation several actions have been taken to reduce opex and to increase availability and reliability of the machine.
The most important activities comprising an energetic survey and design review of the more power demanding magnets, driven by machine physics issues, and also energy saving commitment.
Aim of this presentation is to describe the power request trends, along with some other modification to the utility plants resulting in cost reduction and MTBF increase.

09:30 → 10:00 Excess heat to promote city life: Mrs. Eva Rydén Dalman, Project manager, Lund municipality

How can heat recovery be used to make a city attractive and pleasant? The research facilities ESS and MAX IV generate a lot of excess low temperature water. A lot of different ideas are tried how to utilize it in a creative way that will contribute to the good life in the neighbourhood.
Eva Dalman is project manager for Lund NorthEast and works for the City of Lund. She is trained as an architect and city planner.
